The Battle for Truth in Political Advertising in Australia: Exposing the Fossil Fuel Propaganda Machine
Shameless Deception: How Fossil Fuel Propaganda and the Liberal Party Undermine Democracy and Destroy Our Future
A dangerous trend increasingly plagues political advertising in Australia: the spread of blatant misinformation by powerful, vested interests determined to protect their profits at the expense of our collective future. Recent attack ads targeting independent MPs, such as Allegra Spender and Monique Ryan, illustrate how the fossil fuel industry, supported by billionaire-funded organisations like Advance Australia and Australians for Prosperity, close allies of the Liberal Party, are deliberately misleading the public. These bad actors—disguised under benign names and so-called ‘community values’—are not just attacking individuals; they are undermining democracy, sabotaging climate progress, and hastening the destruction of a liveable planet.
The Bad Actors Behind the Propaganda
Advance Australia and Australians for Prosperity present themselves as grassroots organisations advocating for economic prosperity and free markets. Yet, a closer look reveals their true nature: fronts for the fossil fuel industry and their millionaire and billionaire backers. Their attempts to mimic the grassroots appeal of community independents with fabricated 'community values' are deception 101. They posture as champions of the public while serving only the interests of fossil fuel giants, offering division and dishonesty in place of genuine representation.
These organisations have received massive funding from groups like “Coal Australia,” a coalition of coal company executives who recently funnelled $725,000 into Australians for Prosperity. Their mission is clear: to halt any progress toward sustainable energy solutions by spreading fear, doubt, and misinformation – treating Australians as mugs.
The recent billboards in Melbourne and Sydney, claiming that renewables will “cost you the earth,” epitomise this deceit. Ironically, some of these billboards are powered by solar energy, highlighting the hypocrisy of their anti-renewables rhetoric. These campaigns aren’t just dishonest—they are part of a broader strategy to protect fossil fuel profits by delaying the transition to clean energy.
Lies, Misdirection, and Dirty Tactics
The advertisements targeting the so-called “Teal Independents”—a group of community-backed MPs focused on integrity, climate action, cost of living, and sustainable policies—are riddled with falsehoods. Claims that these MPs advocate for “higher GST,” “housing taxes,” and “income tax increases” are outright lies designed to scare voters. Such misinformation is not only unethical; it actively undermines the ability of citizens to make informed decisions during elections.
What makes this even more concerning is the shamelessness with which these tactics are deployed. The Liberal Party and its allies operate with a level of moral disengagement that is a chilling indictment of their character. Their deceptive tactics prey on our fears and anxieties, relying on gut reactions rather than engaging with the head and heart, which represent our better selves. They offer no vision for progress; only divisive rhetoric designed to manipulate and mislead. Their strategy depends on the majority of the population remaining ignorant and uninformed, revealing their utter disregard for truth and fairness.
"When lies dominate our politics, democracy crumbles. It’s time to demand better—truth over fear, progress over division, and integrity over manipulation." Sue Barrett
We could strive to be better informed, but blaming individuals for their lack of knowledge is a convenient distraction from the real issue: these bad actors deliberately exploit a broken system and complicit mainstream media to consolidate power. Figures like Elon Musk exemplify how wealth and influence are weaponised to deceive and betray the public. Ordinary Australians are being manipulated by people who care nothing for their welfare and actively encourage them to vote against their own best interests.
The Deadly Cost of Inaction
Australia is already feeling the devastating effects of climate change: catastrophic bushfires, prolonged droughts, and flooding events that destroy homes, livelihoods, and ecosystems. Globally, unprecedented events like winter wildfires in California serve as stark reminders of the urgency of climate action. Despite this, the fossil fuel lobby continues to poison public discourse with misinformation designed to stoke fear and maintain the status quo.
Make no mistake: the consequences of these lies are deadly. By delaying the transition to renewable energy and obstructing climate policy, these vested interests are directly responsible for the escalating climate crisis. The damage caused by their actions is not limited to the environment; it extends to human health, economic stability, and the very fabric of our democracy and society.
Free and Fair Elections Under Threat
How can we have free and fair elections when billionaires and fossil fuel companies can bankroll campaigns of deceit? The sheer scale of funding behind these propaganda efforts dwarfs the resources available to community-backed independents. A single billboard attacking Allegra Spender or Monique Ryan costs $14,000 a month in Melbourne or Sydney. Meanwhile, pro-climate independents rely on grassroots fundraising to counter these attacks.
This imbalance undermines the democratic process, giving undue influence to those with the deepest pockets rather than those with the best ideas. When lies dominate the political narrative, voters are denied the opportunity to make informed choices based on facts. This is not democracy; it is manipulation.
The Case for Truth in Political Advertising
Zoe Daniel, a former journalist and now independent MP for Goldstein, has been vocal about the need for truth in political advertising. She argues that democracy cannot function properly when voters are bombarded with misinformation. To address this, Daniel and other independents have called for reforms to ensure that political advertising is factual and accountable. These reforms include mandatory fact-checking, penalties for spreading falsehoods, and increased transparency around funding sources.
Such measures are essential to restoring integrity to our political system. Without them, powerful interests will continue to exploit loopholes, using their wealth to drown out honest, community-focused voices.
Fighting Back
The fight for truth in political advertising is about more than defending individual MPs; it is about safeguarding the future of our country and planet from the greed of a few. Australians must demand better by exposing lies and manipulative tactics, supporting reforms that ensure accountability and transparency, and standing with those striving for integrity and climate action. These attacks are a rallying cry for all who believe in fairness and justice to push back against misinformation, reclaim democracy, and secure a sustainable, liveable future for all.
Onward we press.

Yeah the lack of truth in political advertising is truly scary. In the absence of regulation, I hope that community connections can help inoculate and protect people against disinformation attacks.
